Teen Football Star Killed In Columbia Mall Shooting Was A Standout On, Off The Field

A 16-year-old high school football player was shot and killed in a targeted attack outside the Columbia Mall, leaving family, friends, and teammates grieving an immeasurable loss, authorities said.

Michael Jerome Robertson III, a sophomore at Wilde Lake High School, was gunned down on Saturday, Feb. 22 in the parking lot near the Lidl grocery store on Little Patuxent Parkway, according to Howard County Police.

A second teen, Roberton's 15-year-old friend Blake McCray, was critically wounded in the shooting and remains hospitalized.

Police arrested 18-year-old Emmetson Zeah who is being held without bail at the Howard County Detention Center, though Roberton's sudden death sent shockwaves through the community.

"He was a beloved son, friend, and teammate," organizers of a GoFundMe campaign for the family wrote.

"To know him was to love him, and his presence brought joy, warmth, and inspiration to all who had the privilege of crossing his path."

The standout student-athlete was raised by his mother, Wanda Renea Vereen, who "instilled in him the values of perseverance, kindness, and strength," loved ones said.

"His talent on the field was matched only by his heart off of it—always lifting up those around him with encouragement, laughter, and unwavering friendship."

The fundraiser has been launched to support his family, quickly raising nearly $8,000 toward a $50,000 goal in just 48 hours.

"Michael’s impact on his family, friends, and teammates was immeasurable," his mother said.

"His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched with his kindness and the love he so freely gave."

The GoFundMe can be found here.

“Though he has left this world too soon, his spirit remains with us. His memory will be cherished forever, and his light will continue to shine in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.”
